Nairobi invests in Kshs1bn UC system

Nairobi has invested in a Kshs1bn ICT-generated project based on a Unified Communication System to improve government service delivery and management.

Through the project the county will launch Wi-Fi hotspots, install CCTV camera equipment, establish a county data centre and implement an access control system for county offices, as well as a call centre and digital platform to connect all 17 sub-counties.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko said, "I thank the World Bank and ICT Authority for their Kshs 800m support for the supply of active equipment and unified communication, Nairobi County has contributed Kshs 380m for data centre, structured cabling at headquarters and sub-county offices."

"This technology will also help us catch people who enjoy services of the County Government, but refuse to pay. I wish to remind all Nairobi residents that it is your taxes that allow us to deliver services," he added.

The governor continued that, "With this data centre, we are rolling out emails for all staff, installing modern telephone systems in all offices, installing more than 150 CCTV cameras in and around City Hall and City Hall Annex, and establishing a modern website."

It is expected that the infrastructure will facilitate payments from residents and the digital platform specifically will enable residents to monitor services including land rates, single business permit, parking and water services

The data centre will be used to support digital services including establishing a digital land registry for the county.

Nairobi has confirmed it will begin to issue title deeds to city residents supported by the digital land registry in 2018. "It is our intention to working closely to see how we can improve the lives of Nairobi residents through upgrading infrastructure so that the real owners of Nairobi - the people of Eastlands and informal settlements - can have proper roads, sewerage, water street lighting as everybody else in the city county," said President Uhuru Kenyatta
