MTN Cameroon in race against time to reconnect subscribers

MTN Cameroon in race against time to reconnect subscribers

MTN Cameroon subscribers have had their data connectivity restored after a disruption to services as a result of a break in the West Africa Cable System (WACS) and South Atlantic 3 (SAT-3) in Europe.

Subscribers experienced ad-hoc connectivity and in some cases partial or total blackout of internet services which started on 16 January 2020 and lasted until 18 January.

The operator announced the development, but provided no specific details of what led to the cut.

MTN Cameroon's Corporate Communications Manager Massey Njiti Bongang said mobile internet services were re-established using alternative routes.

MTN Cameroon's engineers and their local and international partners are carrying out works to repair the double cut of the WACS and SAT-3 fibre optic cable, which could take several days.

"MTN Cameroon presents its sincere apologies to its clients for the inconveniences caused which were involuntary and reiterates its commitment to offer Cameroonians with optimal quality of services on its network," the telecoms operator said in a message to its subscribers.

It is not yet clear if the company is envisaging any compensation plan to pacify its subscribers.

WACS, which is partly owned by MTN Group, connects 14 countries in two continents through Europe, West Africa and South Africa.
