Ghana police arrest cable theft suspects

Ghanaian police have arrested three suspects for allegedly attempting to steal Vodafone Ghana's underground cables.

According to reports, a national manager in charge of the fixed service network at Vodafone spotted the suspects welding a metal cover at an intersection opposite the environmental protection agency building in Accra.

Accra's Central Divisional Police Commander, chief superintendent Oklu Gyamera said Daniel Atuahene, aged 29, Emmanuel Akolisse (26) and Yaw Opoku (43) had been arrested.

However, one suspect managed to escape arrest, said the police official.

Gymera explained that the suspects were arrested after receiving a tip-off on Monday evening.

He added that when the police went to the scene, Atuahene and Akolisse were found wearing reflectors and stealing cables valued at $2,400.

"When a search was conducted on a Kia Towner truck the suspects had parked by them, a gas cylinder, a carbide cylinder, a club hammer and other implements which they used to execute the crime were found on them," he said.

Opoku, the driver of the vehicle, was also arrested when he attempted to flee with the others.

The suspects are expected to appear in court on charges of attempted stealing and unlawfully causing damage to property.
