Africa’s largest telecommunications company MTN, has recorded a 6.9% increase in its subscriber base to 176 million subscribers.
This is according to MTN’s chief executive officer, Sifiso Dabengwa, speaking at the company's announcement of half year-results as of June 2012.
MTN Group has operations in 21 African countries with other business operations in the Middle East, particularly Iran.
The group also grew its revenue to R66.4 billion despite market conditions on the continent that are characterised by increasing levels of competition, regulatory requirements, political unrest in certain countries and the global economic slowdown.
"Despite these challenges, revenue showed solid growth of 17.5% year-on-year, driven mainly by strong operational performance and competitive value propositions in South Africa, Iran and Ghana,” said Dabengwa.
