Mobile network operator MTN says it recorded an increase in call traffic numbers following its introduction of the Mahala MTN Zone promotion deal.

Mapula Bodibe, general manager for consumer segments, MTN South Africa, said the increase in call traffic was an indicator of MTN customers taking advantage of the opportunity to make more calls at no charge on Thursday each week.

“MTN's Mahala offering has seen significant success in the market, attracting new customers and enabling existing customers to get more value for their recharges,” Bodibe said.

She said the offering had resulted in an increased number of customers recharging on Thursdays, a trend that was historically not observed as customers were saving their recharges predominantly for the weekend.

"Since the introduction of this offering, there have been a lot more customers recharging with MTN on Thursday's, creating more demand for airtime on Thursdays.

She said with the 100% discounts received between 1am and 4am, customers could make free calls to stay in touch.
