Zimbabwean mobile operator Econet, which plans to expand its capacity to 10 million Zimbabweans, has been given a massive boost following the arrival of large shipments of network equipment.

The new equipment, which was received last week, could see Econet's investment in Zimbabwe exceed $1 billion - the largest ever in the country's history.

"Econet wireless has received large shipments of network equipment as part of the push to expand our capacity to 10 million,” said Rangarirai Mberi, Econet head of communication.

"This follows the approval by the Econet board to mop up the remaining demands for lines in the Zimbabwe market," Mberi added.

The equipment which is is being supplied by telco company Ericsson and the Chinese telecom manufacturer ZTE is expected to be setup and complete by next year, say Econet officials.
