Launched on 6 August 2019 from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana, HYLAS 3 is Avanti Communications Group's latest satellite deployment.
Described by the company as one of its most ambitious to date, the satellite features over 4GHz capacity of steerable beam technology in a unique steerable user and gateway beam combination.

According to its statement, Avanti HYLAS 3 has been carefully constructed in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA), MDA, Airbus and OHB. It shares a platform with EDRS-C, a data relay mission for low earth orbiting satellites.
"HYLAS 3 has a multi-beam steerable cluster enabling mobile and broadband coverage to be moved to where it is needed within minutes. For example, on Avanti's HYLAS 4, one of the steerable beams was deployed in less than 24 hours to assist humanitarian aid relief in Mozambique following Cyclone IDAI in April 2019," reads an excerpt from the statement.
Avanti chief executive officer Kyle Whitehill, says: "Our objective was to bring connectivity to areas where it doesn't exist and HYLAS 3 adds to Avanti's already extensive capability and coverage in EMEA. With this satellite in orbit, we are now providing a comprehensive communications network that will empower individuals, communities, and businesses across this region."
In July 2019 Avanti signed a three-year master distributor agreement on its HYLAS 4 and HYLAS 2 satellites with South African telco Vox Telecom (Vox).
The partnership enables Vox to use Avanti's satellite fleet, which provides full coverage across sub-Saharan Africa, "to deliver a cost-effective and reliable high-speed broadband service to the remotest areas in the region."
Avanti said it has invested over R2.1-billion (US$143-million) in local infrastructure and new offices in South Africa.
