Kenyans can now pay their taxes using Airtel's mobile money service.

The country's second largest mobile network has partnered with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to switch on the service.

As a result, Airtel Money customers across the country can make enquiries over KRA services, generate KRA payment reference numbers, and make payments through Airtel Money using the shortcode *572#.

"The revolutionary service provides Airtel Money customers in Kenya a convenient, flexible and time saving option for tax payment as they will no longer have to walk into KRA banking halls to queue to pay their taxes," Airtel Kenya said.

"Taxpayers who pay taxes using Airtel Money are assured that their payments will be cleared, processed and credited to the KRA account in real-time."

Airtel Kenya chief executive officer (CEO) Adil El Youssefi said the partnership is aimed at increasing Airtel Money customer satisfaction and convenience.

"Airtel will continue to partner with corporate and government entities as it seeks to revolutionise its services and more importantly provide customers with convenient, fast and secure options of transacting on Airtel Money," he said.

To make payments, subscribers will need a KRA payment reference number, which can be acquired on the KRA website or via mobile.

The revenue authority has also made available traffic revenue service payments e-slip generation through mobile, allowing users, amongst other things, to apply for driving licences, transfer vehicle ownership and make motor vehicle inspection payments.

After acquiring yuMobile earlier this year, Airtel's subscriber base grew from 5.3 million to 7.85 million.
