Telkom to double SA ADSL speeds

South African fixed line operator, Telkom, plans to double ADSL speeds by the end of this year at no cost to customers.

Download speeds of 1,024 Kbps (around 1 Mbps) will be migrated to 2,048 Kbps (2 Mbps) and 2,048 Kbps (2 Mbps) will be migrated to 4,096 Kbps (4 Mbps). Meanwhile, subscribers with 4,096 Kbps (4Mbps) lines will be migrated to 10,240 Kbps (10 Mbps) speeds.

According to a company statement, the upgrade is expected to take place in a phased approach commencing 11 November 2013.

The statement also reads that “all resellers of ADSL services - users are set to benefit from planned speed upgrades at no additional cost”.

Telkom has said migrating to better ADSL lines is part of its planned ‘Network Transformation Programme’, which is expected to increase the performance of the lines and meet the country’s growting broadband demands.

Casper Kondo Chihaka, Telkom’s managing executive of wholesale services, said, “As part of the company’s extensive Network Transformation Programme, deploying our exchange infrastructure closer to businesses and residential customers – essentially shortening the local loop – means that we are in a position to increase the performance of ADSL lines. This will provide customers the ability to burst to potentially higher speeds subject to network conditions.”

He added, “These speed enhancements will contribute to driving fixed broadband penetration in the South African market as it facilitates the access for ISPs’ customers to rich media content such as video, music and seamless live streaming.”
