Avanti Communications officials say preparations for the launch of a satellite that will provide broadband to southern and eastern Africa are at an advanced stage.

Duncan Mackenzie-Reid, Avanti spokesperson, has said that the satellite has arrived safely at its launch site at the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

“On site preparations will commence shortly to ready the satellite for its launch at approximately 9.50pm UK-time on 2 August. The launch is designated flight VA208, using an Ariane 5 space vehicle,” he said from the UK.

The satellite is poised to bring greater broadband options to the continent, while also acting as a backup in case terrestrial or submarine fixed line networks are damaged or being repaired.
