Ugandan officials are planning to lay an underground fibre-optic cable linking the one of the country’s southernmost towns called Mutukula to Tanzania, a senior official has said.
"Ultimately, the fibre optic cable will link Uganda to the submarine cables on the East African coast providing access to the rest of the world through Kenya," said director for technical services at Uganda National Information Technology Authority, Peter Kahiigi.
Kahiigi said Uganda is building a fibre-optic backbone network to break its dependence on ‘expensive’ satellite connections for both telephony and internet access.
