MTN Zambia plans 3G expansion.

MTN Zambia plans to rollout more 3G sites around the country in order to provide communication solution that supports sustainable development and financial inclusion, particularly in key sectors such as agriculture.

Amon Jere, MTN chief sales and distribution officer, said the company will continue to invest in communication to meet a demand amongst small scale farmers.

The company has embarked on an aggressive marketing campaign focused on its mobile money services and also claims its subscriber base has grown.

Last year MTN stated that it had over two million mobile money subscribers. There are no current figures available.

Jere did not disclose how many 3G sites the company plans to roll out or how much it would cost the company.

However, a source at MTN told ITWeb Africa that the company will determine the total number of sites and relevant costs once it has completed an assessment of target areas.

He said eastern province is likely to have more sites because the company has noted an increase in farming activity and improvements to the road network infrastructure.

MTN is Zambia's largest mobile phone company with about 51% of Zambia's mobile market followed by Airtel and the government owned Zamtel.
