Just-in-time set-top-box delivery helps Nigeria

Just-in-time set-top-box delivery helps Nigeria.

Nigeria's digital migration has received a boost with the delivery of 150,000 set-top boxes from RLG Communications, the Nigerian subsidiary of Ghanaian gadgets manufacturing company RLG.

The company was contracted by the Nigerian government to manufacture and supply one million digital set-top boxes.

It has confirmed the delivery of the first batch of 150,000 units for the pilot phase of digital migration being undertaken by the Television Enterprises Limited, a subsidiary of the National Television Authority (NTA).

Nigeria is among several nations that have failed to meet the agreed upon June 2015 deadline as set by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

According to the ITU only Algeria, Gabon, Kenya, Morocco, Rwanda, Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda, had successfully achieved digital migration.

Acting Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Alheri Saidu, said Nigerians can now see that the agency is serious about the country going digital.

According to the ITU, there will be decrease in spectrum occupancy when digital broadcasting is introduced, especially in countries such as Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cape Verde, Congo-B, Côte d'Ivoire, DRC, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Morocco, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia.

Nigeria reportedly has a digital television penetration rate of 22% and stands to benefit from the US$82 billion digital dividend by 2025, as disclosed by the Global System for Mobile Telecommunication Association (GSMA).
