California-based tech firm ItsOn has signed a group agreement with mobile phone operator MTN Group.

MTN will use ItsOn's cloud-based solution to increase subscribers by selling both enhanced mobile connection services and new digital content through a personalised and affordable on-device commerce experience.

ItsOn's platform is designed to virtualise and automate key operator business and operational support systems such as billing, charging, rating, policy, activation, marketing and on-device purchases.

Operators overlay ItsOn's platform on top of their existing IT systems to launch services, accelerate mobile commerce growth and enhance the digital consumer experience. The platform includes a device application and virtual connected cloud service.

A statement by ItsOn noted that MTN will deploy consumer offers leveraging its technology initially in South Africa, with the expectation to expand to other countries at a later stage.

MTN is Africa's largest mobile operator with operations in 22 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

The platform is an end-to-end cloud-based Saas solution that has been introduced to address challenges of siloed legacy operator IT infrastructure, which, according to ItsOn, requires lengthy internal development projects and recurring contractual costs.

"As we expand into emerging markets, we're seeing untapped base of new smartphone users with a growing appetite for new services and digital content," said Albert Fernandez, Group Chief Consumer Officer of MTN.

He added, "We want to make it easier for our customers to access these services and content, act on contextual offers and purchase new goods directly from their devices. We believe ItsOn's platform is the best solution for this need on the market today."
